Sprouting Chefs cooking class starts Aug. 15

Calling all farm fresh chefs in the making, the second of four weeklong summer camps at Lewes Historical Society starts Aug. 15. Classes will run from 9 a.m. to noon, Monday to Friday, Aug. 15 to 19, at the Lewes Historical Society, 110 Shipcarpenter St. in Lewes.
Sprouting Chefs is a southern Delaware-based company whose mission is to provide culinary instruction and education to children ages 3-12. The Lewes Historical Society welcomes Sprouting Chefs as it embraces Delaware's hardworking sustainable farms and creative local artisans.
A variety of cooking camps will be held throughout the remainder of the summer highlighting Delaware's most abundant season of fresh, local fruits and vegetables. Each of Sprouting Chefs’ four weekly summer camps focuses on fruits and vegetables of a different color. Discussions include the nutritional benefits of each color group, importance of the food pyramid and consuming healthy foods to fuel bodies. For those families who cannot commit to an entire week, a three-day camp option is available as well.
In addition to preparing a dish incorporating the seasonal, colorful fruit or veggie of the day, children will participate in a story circle and also complete an arts and crafts project to complement the cooking activity of the day. Music and movement will be incorporated intermittently throughout the morning.
On the last day of camp, each child will be invited to plant fruit or vegetable seeds in a decorated terra cotta pot to be brought home and cared for.
The summer camp schedule includes Green Week Aug. 15 to 19, Blue & Purple Week Aug. 22 to 26, and Orange & Yellow Week Aug. 29 to Sept. 2.
The cost is $150 per child plus a $25 materials/lunch fee for the Monday to Friday camp. The three-day camp option is $100, which includes materials/lunch fee. Campers choose the days. For more information and to register, go to www.sproutingchef.com.
