A Second Glance Resale Shop opens at Peddlers Village

July 29, 2011

Exercise equipment, computer parts, helmets, lamps, belts, board games and furniture - organizing such diverse donations is a job in itself.

But at A Second Glance Resale Shop, located on Route 24 adjacent to Peddlers Village, owner Dianna DiGiacoma said tackling organization and making sure her shop is easy to navigate were some of the issues she had to confront early in her mission to open the thrift shop.

“I wanted to make it organized so you know where to look for items,” DiGiacoma said. “But I like retail, so now it’s just fun, too.”

And now the business joins several other Cape Region resale shops on what she referred to as the “thrift store loop,” which she said brings many of her customers on repeated visits to her shop in order to scope out the best bargains in the thrift store world.

Millsboro resident Winnie Oggenfuss said she volunteers her time in another thrift store closer to her home, but stopped at A Second Glance for the first time recently to see what the new resale shop had to offer.

“I was just coming to see what they have,” Oggenfuss said. “It’s very neat, and I’m impressed with the way it is laid out here.”

The next hurdle for DiGiacoma will be obtaining her nonprofit status for the store, which sells donated items to benefit three charities, including the Amen House in Oak Orchard; Ears to Hear, a radio ministry in Haiti; and Jusst Sooup, a ministry in Lewes. DiGiacoma said she has been working on that complex endeavor since opening in May.

“I’ve worked in retail in the past,” she said. “I’ve always enjoyed working with the public, the ministries and I want to be able to help people.”

Volunteer Jennifer Littleton said she has been working at A Second Glance since May and she knows the thrift store will raise money to make a difference.

“I’m volunteering my time,” Littleton said. “I completely trust [DiGiacoma] with the business, the money and the charities it is going to.”

As DiGiacoma continues the process to become a nonprofit entity at A Second Glance, she said she will have a board of directors to help direct the funds, and she hopes she can make the resale shop into a vehicle to help more people who have fallen on hard times.

“I just had some friends from church whose house was struck by lightning,” she said. “I’m trying to see what I can do here. I’d like to make this into a real ministry.”

A Second Glance Resale Shop is next to Peddlers Village shopping center and is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Saturday. For more information, call 302-947-4600.
