The Delaware State Education Association presented the November Education Support Professional of the Month Award to Tammy Eitner, a paraprofessional in the Cape Henlopen School District.
Eitner's nomination said, "Tammy Eitner is a paraeducator but most of all she is an active advocate for our students, colleagues and community. She works very diligently day in and day out to spread the info about topics that concern education such as social justice, classroom size, ESP of year, and budget and wages.”
She is a single mom of two toddlers and works for Cape Henlopen School District and Grotto Grand Slam while she attends college full time, with a goal of finishing her master’s in special education with certification in autism next year from Wilmington University. She recently took a position on the DSEA executive board as a representative for Sussex County.
She is an inspiration in the union, advocating for students and staff. She is constantly recruiting new members, showing appreciation for current members, and spreading the word about events and functions or member benefits. She also has offered to be on many task forces and lobby for legislation.
She also advocates for early childhood education. As a one-on-one aide for a student who has orthopedic needs, Eitner spent many summer hours at A.I. DuPont learning about physical exercises that would help her student's mobility and strength.
