Lewes Historical Society Wooden Boat Launch set Aug. 10

August 8, 2018

The Lewes Historical Society Wooden Boat Build Volunteer Crew is hosting 12 campers ages 13 to 15 from Tyler's Camp in their second annual Boat Building Event. In a multi-generational, cooperative event, campers, (four of whom are returning from 2017,) will work with hand tools to construct 12-foot long operational Bevin Skiffs. Campers have undergone training by skilled volunteers with over 25 years of experience. Construction will take place at the 1884 US Life Saving Station, alongside the Lightship Overfalls, at Canalfront Park in Lewes.

The general public is welcome to come by daily between 12:30 and 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday, Aug. 6-10 to witness the vessels be transformed from piles of wood into operational watercraft by enthusiastic children under the guidance of knowledgeable volunteers.

Attendance is especially encouraged Friday, Aug. 10 after 1:30 p.m., when three completed vessels will be launched in the Lewes Canal and an audience to cheer the builders on will most be needed.
