George Martin Howard, man of many trades

November 9, 2018

George Martin Howard, 81, of Lewes passed away peacefully Wednesday, Nov. 7, 2018, at his home.

George was a man of many trades: farming, carpentry, and being a heavy equipment operator.  Having hard work instilled in him from an early age, he formed numerous businesses over the course of his life from a construction company with his son, John and son-in-law, Baron Joseph, to a trucking company and a mobile home park.

He was always out in the public trying to make a deal.  He enjoyed going to auctions and seeing the potential money to be made in what others saw as junk. He also enjoyed traveling, watching NASCAR races and socializing with friends.

George was preceded in death by his parents, George H. Howard and Bessie (Fowler) Howard; his wife, Suzann (Cooper) Howard; a son-in-law, Baron Joseph; a brother, Lester Howard and a sister, Vivian Wilson.  He is survived by his four children, Shirley Mihm and her husband Ed, John M. Howard, Kathleen Marie Rogers and Mary Lou Joseph; seven grandchildren, Jennifer Blakeney, Kevin Soots, James Rogers, Jessica Rogers, Heather Rogers, Billie Jean Joseph and Lisa Marie Clausen; and eight great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his longtime companion and love of many years, Mary Farber; a sister, Patsy Weatherly; a sister-in-law, Vicky Howard and several nieces and nephews and cousins.

A celebration of his life will be held at noon, Monday, Nov. 12, at the Long Neck Chapel of Melson Funeral Services, 32013 Long Neck Road, Millsboro, where friends and family may call after 11 a.m.  Interment will be private.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial contributions in George’s name to Seasons Hospice, 220 Continental Drive, Suite 407, Newark, DE 19713.
