Harrington harriers win Long & Foster 5K titles

Inaugural race attracts 89 runners

The inaugural Long & Foster Has Heart 5K held May 26 on the Irish Eyes course in Lewes posted 89 finishers along with many walkers, and children who ran a Kiddie K prior to the race.

Matt Sparacino, 41, of Harrington was the overall winner in a time of 19:02.

Holly Wilson Smith, 35, who starred in cross country at Lake Forest High School, was the first woman and second overall in a time of 19:07.

Laura Berger, 43, of Landenberg, Pa., won the female masters race in 21:46, while John Schultz, 52, of Washington, D.C., was first in male masters in 22:13.

Bill McArthur, 78, is working out a Benjamin Button math coefficient, comparing his performance in the 70-and-over race (31:04) to the best in the 9-and-under category, which was stacked with six runners under 30 minutes highlighted by 8-year-old Kellan Feimster in 25:08, Quade Cummings in 25:18 and Nicholas Petito in 25:44.

Mark Brainard, 60, Delaware Tech president, ran 28:04, good for second in the 60-69 age group and fourth in 9-and-under.

Veteran basketball and baseball coach Jim Doody, 73, who won three state titles in boys’ basketball at Newark, ran 36:59. Doody is currently at Delcastle in his 51st year of teaching.

“I’m happy with the turnout for the first year,” said event organizer Brian Donahue. “It was fun. I’m hoping we can really get this thing going.”
