Eco-paddle on Broad Creek in Laurel set June 22

Reclaim Our River - Nanticoke will host a guided morning eco-paddle from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, June 22, on Broad Creek, launching from Roger C. Fisher Park in Laurel.

Broad Creek is a tributary of the Nanticoke River, one of the most iconic, pristine and scenic rivers entering the Chesapeake Bay. The Nanticoke River Water Trail spans a 26-mile segment of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail through Delaware and Maryland.

Broad Creek is also home to Delaware’s State Champion Bald Cypress Tree, which is over 91 feet tall and more than 700 years old.

Experienced paddlers and first-timers are welcome to bring the family and learn about wildlife, water quality and the river’s history while floating on the water. After the paddle, participants can enjoy lunch and learn about Reclaim Our River’s partnerships with local organizations working to educate, re-create and protect the Nanticoke River and its extensive watershed.

This event is sponsored by Nanticoke Watershed Alliance. Other partners include Delaware Nature Society, Delaware Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control Nonpoint Source Program and ROR Nanticoke.

Participants are encouraged to bring their own kayaks or canoes, but equipment will be provided to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis. The $10 registration fee covers the guided paddle, lunch and rentals, if needed.
