Sorouri walks the dog on the field at Run for the Paws 5K

Darian Sorouri, 23, led a fast field of 227 runners at the 11th annual Run for the Paws Lucy Crowe 5K Aug. 3 in Dewey Beach.

The Wilmington runner fought off Sam Mackenzie, 36, of Ann Arbor, Mich., in the final half mile to win with a time of 16:09 to Mackenzie’s 16:18. 

LaSalle University sophomore Andrew Weir, 20, a longtime friend of the Seashore Striders, was third, clocking in at 16:42. Weir was followed by Francisco Puac in 16:52, Reginaldo Hernandez in 17:32 and Martin Rodriguez in 17:56.

Natalie Mackenzie, 38, wife of Sam, was the overall women’s winner in 19:18. She was joined on the leaderboard by Abbey Churchill in 21:41, Susan Dunn in 22:21, Kelly Tingle in 22:26 and Margaret Colvin in 22:52. 

Steven Levin of Selbyville was the masters winner in 18:45. Dunn of Laurel was the women’s masters winner. 

Notables: Alyssa Simon walked the 5K with friends on her 46th birthday. Shiloh O’Grady and Erin Noonan, a pair of 9-year-old friends, captured the female 9-and-under title in 27:29. Local winners of age groups were: Bennett Brumbley, 11, male 10-13, 21:45; Lilly Noonan, 11, female 10-13, 24:35; Aviah Stillman, 23, female 20-24, 25:11; Kelly Tingle, 31, female 30-34, 22:25; Abby Andrews, 36, female 35-39, 23:43; Jen Perry, 47, female 45-49, 24:56; Jackie Quigley, 52, female 50-54, 23:21; Eric Schaeffer, 59, male 55-59, 22:30; Margaret Colvin, 58, female 55-59, 22:51; Nina Smeltzer, 60, female 60-64, 25:30; Rick Poppleton, 66, male 65-69, 21:58; Dianne Golden, 66, female 65-69, 24:58; Jules Woodall, 71, male 70-74, 25:40; JoAnn Szczepkowski, 73, female 70-74, 27:52; Bernie Gallagher, 78, male 75-79, 27:17; Jack Noel, 80, male 80-and-over, 43:12; Jamie Wollard, 80, female 80-and-over, 53:06. 

A number of dogs and handlers completed a one-mile walk together.
