Cape volleyball falls to Indian River 0-3

Vikings move to 0-2
September 12, 2019

The Cape volleyball team took to the hardwood of Indian River and when the final point was over, the Indians took a 25-19, 25-22, 25-20 victory from the Vikings.

“I thought we played much better tonight,” said Cape head coach Tyler Coupe. “I’m not thrilled totally, clearly, still losing. However, we played with much more of a purpose and a fire under us that was pleasing to see. Our unforced errors still need to decline; we were able to get some great defensive plays that we weren’t able to capitalize on. I think it’s a match we can take some momentum from into our next match.“

The Indians were paced by junior Raychel Ehlers with 23 kills, 12 digs and two aces. Freshman setter Camryn Ehlers assisted on 16 points while making eight digs. Jessica Amezcua had 11 digs.

“Having my sister setting for me really helps me,” said Raychel Ehlers. “That connection really helps, and Jess [Amezcua] passing back there gets the ball right to me.”

Cape was led by Katie Knarr with 11 digs, while Emily Lamb, Jocelyn Leach, Erin Morrissey and Abby Derrickson teamed for 21 digs. Morrissey, Madison Mahoney and Angelica Kusen teamed for eight kills.

“I think we played well,” said junior Katie Knarr. “We learned from our mistakes from the first set. We had 11 errors in the first set and only three in the second set. We had higher intensity as we went along. We wanted it really bad.”

“Our serving errors were down this match compared to the Delmarva Christian match,” said Cape junior Madison Mahoney. “We gave them a few points on serve, but not many.”

The Vikings junior varsity moved to 1-1 on the season with a 21-25, 18-25 loss to the Indians JV.

The Vikings were set to host Caesar Rodney Thursday, Sept. 12.
