Mariner tops Beacon 2-1 in soccer action

November 6, 2019

The Mariner Middle School soccer team bested Beacon 2-1 in district action Nov. 4 at Cape’s Legends Stadium.

Beacon’s Brandon Somoza-Lima started off the scoring at the 17-minute mark of the first half. Mariner’s Collin Sivels tied it up just before halftime off a pass from Angel Haro-Simental.

Mariner was awarded a penalty kick at the 46-minute mark and Haro-Simental put it past Beacon’s goalkeeper for the 2-1 lead that held up through the rest of the second half.

“Going into the game and into the season, both the team and myself had the Beacon game circled on our schedule,” said Mariner coach Tyler Nicols. “It had been a tough season for us up until this point, with some difficult losses, but we knew a result tonight would mean a lot.”

Beacon outshot Mariner 15-10 in the contest.

“Mariner and Beacon played a fantastic match against one another,” said Cape varsity coach Partrick Kilby. “I thoroughly enjoyed watching it. I thought Mariner’s goalkeeper did a wonderful job as he saved a barrage of shots. I enjoyed watching the pace and skill of Mariner’s Angel Arano Rebolledo. Collin Sivels of Mariner has blazing speed, and he finished a nice scoring opportunity. Beacon created so many chances, but couldn’t put them away. I thought Beacon’s Trent Kauffman played really well in the central-mid, and I was blown away at the speed and skill of Beacon’s center-back Justin Friscia. When I spoke to the eighth-graders from both schools, I counted 23. All but two said they were going to attend Cape and try out for the team. I am very excited for the youth of our middle schools to make their way to the high school.”

Beacon finished the season at 7-4, while Mariner lost 1-6 to Dover Central Middle Nov. 6 to finish at 3-7-1.
