Lewes honored on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. weekend

In recognition of the City of Lewes’ historic passage of the honorary renaming of West 4th Street to the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Way, and establishing an African-American Commission, Mayor Ted Becker received a commemorative tube that crossed the Atlantic Ocean from Africa to the United States.

The tube was carried aboard Don Victor Mooney’s rowboat. Mooney is president of HR 1242 Resilience Project, and is the first African-American to row across the Atlantic Ocean.

The historic memento was presented on the sidelines of the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade Jan. 18, which was canceled due to inclement weather. This year’s theme was Celebrating 100 Years of Women’s Suffrage: The Struggle Continues.

"We have a duty to recognize government when the humanity of history is respected,” said Mooney.
