Film society features artist Lucian Freud March 10, 31
The Rehoboth Beach Film Society offers the Journeys in Art History - Exhibition on Screen film series to introduce the works of history’s greatest painters and let filmgoers view blockbuster art exhibitions from galleries worldwide.
The third presentation in the series is “Lucian Freud: A Self Portrait,” which will be screened at 6 p.m., Tuesday, March 10, and 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 31, at the Cinema Art Theater, 17701 Dartmouth Drive, Lewes.
For the first time in history, the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in collaboration with the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, is bringing together Lucian Freud’s self-portraits. The exhibition will display more than 50 paintings, prints and drawings in which this modern master of British art turned his unflinching eye firmly on himself. One of the most celebrated painters of his time, Lucian Freud is also one of very few 20th century artists who portrayed themselves with such consistency.
Spanning nearly seven decades, his self-portraits give a fascinating insight into both his psyche and his development as a painter, from his earliest portrait painted in 1939 to the final one executed 64 years later. When seen together, his portraits represent an engrossing study into the dynamic of aging and the process of self-representation. Freud’s depictions of himself place him in a lineage of artists, from Dürer to Rembrandt onward, who took self-portraiture to new heights. This intense exhibition creates a unique opportunity to view the life’s work of a master in one show.
Admission is $9 for members and $11 for nonmembers. Tickets can be purchased online at rehobothfilm.com or by calling 302-645-9095. Available seats will be sold at the door 30 minutes before starting time.
