Cape schools closed through May 15
Cape Henlopen School District Superintendent Robert Fulton has announced schools will remain closed through May 15, staying in line with Gov. John Carney’s shelter in place order March 22.
“Our staff has worked tirelessly throughout this difficult time to provide resources for students and their families and will continue to do so as long as necessary,” Fulton said in a letter to parents. “We will continue to update you as information becomes available to us.”
Under Carney’s latest state of emergency order, schools will remain closed until at least May 15, or until the COVID-19 virus has been contained. Cape Henlopen School District has been preparing for educational services for its students and will announce a plan by the end of this week, Fulton said.
“We will be communicating through the mass calling system, email, social media and, most importantly, www.CapeHenlopenSchools.com,” Fulton said. “In an effort to learn about technology needs from our families, there will be a telephone survey going to all families tonight at 6 p.m. This information is critical to planning for virtual learning. Please answer the call and answer the two questions.”
All Cape Henlopen offices and schools are closed to visitors. Administrators and secretaries are working remotely and can be reached easiest through email. Email addresses can be found on the district website. If you do not have access to email and need to talk with someone, call the school and use the dial-by-name directory to leave a message for the principal. Messages will be checked daily.
Cape Henlopen began distributing “Grab & Go” meals March 18 at H.O. Brittingham Elementary for pickup. The program will operate Monday through Friday until further notice. School buses are being sent to 15 locations throughout the district for “Grab & Go” meal pickup. All details can be found at CapeHenlopenSchools.com.
The Virtual Viking learning opportunities information is also linked on the district’s website under the “Families” tab and named “Interim Virtual Learning.” New links and materials are added often. These opportunities are voluntary.
In an effort to assist with needed supports for students with IEPs, the district is offering a point of contact, Supervisor of Special Programs Dr. Jeff Conrad, during the period schools are closed. Dr. Conrad will be available to address questions and concerns during regular business hours from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and can be reached at jeff.conrad@cape.k12.de.us.
