This week was supposed to be the much-anticipated week of The Masters, but everyone knows by now that this is not happening, along with any other sport. But there is some good news in that it is now scheduled to be played in November. We have to hope this happens.
So since there's no golf to watch, I will recommend a good book to read instead. I read a very good history of the Masters' early days last year called 'Making of the Masters.' It tells the history of the founding of the club, and how difficult it was to save the tournament in the first few years, which is very ironic since now the club is one of the richest in the world.
The founder and designer of the course, Bobby Jones, had to come out of retirement to play in the first two events to attract enough golfers and fans to watch the tournament. I am happy the club members are still determined to have the tournament this year. It has always been my favorite. It will be interesting to see the course in the fall without the azaleas in bloom.
The whole men's golf Major season has been completely changed. As of right now, the first Major is scheduled to be the PGA Championship in August at Harden Park golf course in California. It will be followed by the US Open, now scheduled for September in New York at Winged Foot Golf Course.
Unfortunately, the British Open has been canceled. It was scheduled for July in England at Royal St. George Golf Course. I think the uncertainty there is the weather in England and is the reason why this cannot be rescheduled. As with most things, this is the first time since World War II that The Open Championship has been canceled.
I can see the desperation to finish the NBA and NHL seasons because they were 2/3 complete but I doubt this is doable with all the unknowns of this virus. We will see. In terms of baseball, I don’t know if it’s going to be feasible to have a season unless it starts by mid-July. That would allow the league to play at least half of the season or 81 games to make it fair for all teams. What a mess!
