Cape math students earn top honors

Regional competition canceled due to COVID-19
May 4, 2020

The COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of a state math competition, but that didn’t stop organizers from honoring Delaware’s top math teams, including Cape High and Beacon Middle students.

For 43 years, the Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League has worked to cultivate interest in math through competitions throughout the school year, Math League Director Denise Griffiths said.

Upon completion of the regional meets, top teams and high scoring students from each region were invited to the Invitational Meets and Awards Banquets in April, which was canceled.

Based on standings from results of four regional math league meets, Griffiths said, the Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League announced awards for the 2019-20 school year.

Cape teams swept first place in regional results for seventh, eighth and ninth grades. For region 10, Beacon Middle’s seventh-grade team and eighth-grade teams earned top honors, and the Cape High freshman team received first place for region 8.

In individual awards, Beacon Middle seventh graders Rania Khan, Anyka Vester and Aiden Hudson received first, second and third place, respectively, in region 10. Beacon Middle eighth-graders Rose Spiezio, Julianna Baron, Hope Muzzi and Kattara Hart placed first, second, third and fourth, respectively, in region 10.

Cape High freshmen Jia Qi Xie placed first and Evan Sydnor placed third for region eight.

This year, Math League Director Denise Griffiths said, there were 352 teams comprising 1,908 students, representing 56 middle schools and 49 high schools, including 17 of the 19 public school districts, and many charter, private and parochial schools.

Schools were separated into geographic regions and four levels of competition - Grade 7, Grade 8, Grade 9 and Grades 10-12. At the middle school level, 181 teams competed in eleven regions, and 171 high school teams competed in eight regions.

The Delaware Secondary School Mathematics League is sponsored by Delaware Council of Teachers of Mathematics.
