Lewes Farmers Market opens

June 4, 2020

Historic Lewes Farmers Market opened the 2020 season May 30 at Shields in Lewes, as Phase 1 reopening of Delaware began June 1. During recent weeks, the staff and volunteers of the market planned for no contact, social distancing and masks.

Volunteers were armed with six-foot pool noodles to demonstrate appropriate distance, and the parking lot was marked with six-foot intervals with a one-way walk-through and separate exit.

Board President Helaine Harris said they moved 200 customers per hour through the 21-vendor market. “Customers are encouraged to preorder from vendors to speed the process and to ensure product is available once they enter the market,” she said. Customers were compliant and understanding, she said.  Upon entering, customers got a sanitizing hand spritz or used the hand washing station, then began the trek through the market. Volunteers helped guide and were on hand to remind everyone to maintain social distancing.

The market is open at 8 a.m., every Saturday and depending on weather, is at George H.P Smith Park or at Sheilds parking lot.
