June 5 vigil in Rehoboth to go on without organizers

June 2, 2020

A candlelight vigil and peaceful demonstration against hate, racism and police brutality planned Friday, June 5, off Route 1 in Rehoboth Beach has been canceled by its original organizers, but individuals say the protest will go on.

The event was sponsored by Southern Delaware Alliance for Racial Justice and Women’s March Sussex, which announced the demonstration May 31. Those organizations later withdrew sponsorship

In a post on its website, the alliance asked those in attendance to wear masks, stand at least 6 feet apart and bring appropriate signs for display to passing motorists.

The vigil was planned in response to the killing of George Floyd while in the custody of Minneapolis police. Floyd’s death has sparked protests around the country where protestors and police have clashed, including at protests in Wilmington and Dover. The vigil was planned to show solidarity with the African-American community and unity against racism and police brutality.

Aside from a press release withdrawing from the event, representatives from the alliance and the women’s march have not responded to requests for comment.
