Dedes named Dewey Beach interim town manager

Committee to identify permanent candidates
July 30, 2020

Dewey Beach commissioners voted unanimously July 24 to appoint Jim Dedes as interim town manager while a committee searches for a permanent manager following the resignation of Scott Koenig.

Dedes, who is assistant town manager, served as interim town manager in 2012

Employees also reported to Dedes in 2017, when charges against former Town Manager Marc Appelbaum were investigated by the Public Integrity Commission. The PIC concluded it did not have jurisdiction on many charges and that charges for which it did have jurisdiction were not supported by evidence and did not meet statutory requirements.

Dedes previously served on the town planning and zoning commission, marketing committee, policy committee and town manager search committee, and was named volunteer of the year in 2009. Before moving to Dewey full time, he managed the probation system in Fairfax County, Va., for 23 years.

Per town charter, a temporary town manager can serve for 90 days; the 90-day period can be extended twice.

Commissioners also voted to form a search committee to identify permanent candidates for the position and to simultaneously advertise the position so the committee has resumes to review when it convenes.

Mayor Dale Cooke asked commissioners to forward suggested names for the search committee, which he said would be announced at the next town meeting.

Koenig took over as Dewey town manager in March 2018. The initial term of his contract, which included an annual salary of $110,000 with increases based on annual evaluations, was set to expire in March 2021. His last day in the office is Wednesday, Aug. 5; Cooke said Koenig will attend the commissioners meeting Friday, Aug. 14.
