DelDOT repairs drainage pipe on Front Street in Milton

October 9, 2020

Front Street in Milton will be closed  through Friday, Oct. 23, for removal and replacement of a failing drainage pipe.

Work will be conducted between Collins Street and Walker Drive.

Delaware Department of Transportation officials said eastbound motorists will be detoured to Federal Street and turn left onto Atlantic Street/Cave Neck Road before returning to Front Street. Westbound motorists will continue west onto Atlantic Street/Cave Neck Road to Federal Street and then turn right onto Front Street. Detour signs have been posted.

The work will be done to remove and replace a crossroad pipe, a large drainage pipe that runs perpendicular to and under the road surface, used primarily for stormwater, according to DelDOT spokesman C.R. MacLeod. He said many years ago, these pipes were converted from wood to corrugated metal, and the failing metal pipes are now being replaced by concrete culvert pipes.

“We have to dig up the whole section of the road, remove the old pipe and put the new one in, which is why these require full closures,” he said.
