Richard Carl ‘Dick’ Goeckeritz, retired businessman

Richard Carl “Dick” Goeckeritz, 95, of Georgetown passed away Sunday, Nov. 15, 2020. He was born in Philadelphia, Pa., June 5, 1925.  He moved to Georgetown in 1938.  At the time of his death he was a resident at Milford Place Senior Living.

Richard graduated from Georgetown High School in 1943.  He entered the Army in August 1943, and was honorably discharged in April 1946, serving in Central Europe, France and Germany during WWII.  After being discharged from the Army he entered Goldey Beacom College, graduating in 1948 with an associate in business degree.  After college graduation, he worked in his family’s hosiery mill, Vanity, for nine years. He then went to work for Farmers Bank of the State of Delaware in 1957 and retired from there after 25 years of service.  After his retirement from the bank, he worked for A.P. Croll and Son Inc. doing payroll and bookkeeping for eight years.

Richard enjoyed fishing, gardening, caring for his homestead, and spending time at the beach on Sunday afternoons after church.  He was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Sussex Post 8 American Legion, Franklin Lodge 12 A.F. & A.M. He was past treasurer for Sunday school, and past president and treasurer for the Methodist Men, both at Wesley United Methodist Church.

He married the love of his life, Susan Rebecca “Becky” Wilson Goeckeritz April 6, 1951. They were married for 69 years.

He was preceded in death by his eldest son, Barry Carl Goeckeritz; sister, Edna Mae Buckler; and parents Carl and Edna Goeckeritz.

Richard is survived by his wife, Rebecca; son, Bruce Edwin Goeckeritz, MD and his wife Rita; daughter, Pamela “Pam” Julianna Goeckeritz; daughter-in-law, Joanna Goeckeritz Jones (Barry’s widow) and her husband, Bill Jones; grandchildren, Leanna Goeckeritz Kitua, Melissa Goeckeritz Willke, Rex Elliott Goeckeritz, and Karen Goeckeritz Fischer, and their spouses; great-grandchildren, Ella and Maddie Fischer, Ayla Willke, and Thane Goeckeritz; nephews, Edwin Lambden, Kenneth and Richard Buckler and Jamie Wilson; and nieces, Wendy Lambden Morris, Trudy Lambden Milburn, Allyson Wilson Buckley, Kim Wilson Banks, Kay Wilson Carrier and Lisa Wilson Phillips.

A public visitation will be held in the chapel of Short Funeral Services, 609 E. Market St., Georgetown, Friday, Nov. 20, from 6 until 8 p.m.  Funeral services and interment will be a private.  All in attendance must wear a mask and adhere to social distancing and gathering protocols.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 E. Laurel St., Georgetown, DE 19947.
