As the hour struck midnight, the Dewey Beach Ball dropped in place in front of the “Dewey Beach A Way of Life” clock. Event co-coordinator Harry Wilson is excited about the inaugural event and what it symbolizes. "The lighted ornament depicts a child riding a skimboard in celebration of our youth and the future of our town," Wilson said. Wilson, owner of the Surfrider Condominiums. teamed up with artist Jeff Ulsh, owner of Dewey Beach Market, to design a life–sized skimboarder as Dewey Beach's version of the traditional New Year's Eve Ball that counts down to midnight. The Cape Region rang in the new year throughout the night of Dec. 31 into the early hours of Jan 1. From the 500 revelers at the Starburst Gayla to the Dewey Beach inaugural midnight Ball Drop, venues were full of celebrating locals and visitors.
Nearly 500 revelers danced 2011 away at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center at the 10th Annual Starburst Gayla. The event raises funds for CAMP Rehoboth Community Center and the Wellness Community.
