A sunny spring day with flowers blooming was the setting May 20 for Bayhealth to formally dedicate the new Circle Park at its Sussex Campus in Milford.
The park and garden fill in the traffic circle at the rear of the campus and are intended to help the physical and mental health of patients. The paving around the park completes a one-mile walking trail around the Sussex campus with 3,000 feet of additional walking paths. The circle also includes 600 plantings and 12 new trees, with 10 benches for sitting down to enjoy nature.
The May 20 event also allowed Bayhealth to name the garden around the circle for longtime donors Joe and Barbara Adkisson, and the garden near the entrance to the hospital to be named for donor Gail Garbutt.
“I think it’s absolutely wonderful,” Barbara Adkisson said. “I love gardening, and I think this is tremendous. I’m a little overwhelmed.”
The Adkissons, who live in Milford, said they have supported Bayhealth and its predecessor, Milford Memorial Hospital, because of their positive effect on the community. The Adkissons said they plan to walk the path around the garden that bears their names.
Bayhealth CEO Terry Murphy said the 169-acre campus, which opened two years ago, is still expanding, with 29 more beds under construction. He said Bayhealth is also building a new primary care and specialist center on Route 9 between Lewes and Georgetown.
In July, Bayhealth will start an academic medical center that will take students from medical school and further their training, with an eye toward them becoming Bayhealth doctors upon graduation.
