About 100 graduates of the Cape High Class of 2020 returned to Legends Stadium July 27 for an in-person recognition ceremony.
As last year’s graduates finally had their chance to walk into the stadium, smiling in their caps and gowns, family members and loved ones in the stands held signs and bouquets while they applauded their graduates.
Class president and valedictorian Anna Stancofski thanked everyone involved in making the celebration possible, mostly the Class of 2020 for being so patient for one more year while waiting for their turn.
“As we move forward toward normalcy, remember that patience is often key, whether it’s global pandemic-related or not, but being patient doesn't necessarily mean being silent,” she said.
“Shout out to Keniah James for letting her and all of our voices be heard by starting the petition to allow tonight to happen,” Stancofski said amidst cheers from her class, “but also for being patient while waiting for the right time to do it. Don't be afraid to be heard like Keniah, whether it's about who you are, what you want or where you're going.”
Superintendent Bob Fulton said he was excited and pleased to see so many families return to celebrate last year’s graduates, who had a virtual ceremony last year due to pandemic restrictions.
Fulton said he pondered what message to deliver to graduates who are one year removed from graduation.
“One of the most important things I learned the hard way and many of us do, is to please make sure you surround yourselves with positive influencers,” he said. “In simple terms, find friends who do the right thing and have a positive influence on your life’s goals.”
Those who surround themselves with negative influencers are more likely to make poor decisions and not reach the goals they set for themselves, Fulton said.
“Each and every choice you make will determine your path,” Fulton said. “Class of 2020, my hope is that the past year has been a great one for all of you. Please continue to make the most out of every opportunity that comes your way, and I wish you a life filled with opportunity and success.”
