Nearly 40 racers competed Sept. 18 in the 3rd annual Race to Benefit the Bays, raising more than $2,500 for the Delaware Center for the Inland Bays.

The event launched from the Henlopen Acres Marina and included paddleboards, kayaks, surf skis and an outrigger canoe. Racers competed in 3- and 5-mile events on the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal.

The race was organized by Drew Martin and Mike Linthicum as an effort to bring together paddle enthusiasts and raise awareness for the center's mission to preserve, protect, and restore Delaware's Inland Bays and their watershed. Sponsors of the race included Henlopen Acres and East of Maui surf shop.

Center Development Coordinator Anna Short said the canal was chosen as a race venue to bring awareness to it as another natural asset that should be protected and enjoyed. The canal is an important tributary of the Inland Bays that embodies the beauty of the estuary, but it doesn't always receive as much attention as other waterways in the watershed, said Short in an email following the race.

The Delaware Center for the Inland Bays is a nonprofit organization established in 1994, and is one of 28 National Estuary Programs. With its many partners, the center works to preserve, protect and restore Delaware’s Inland Bays and their watershed.
