Cape soccer defeats Laurel 5-3

September 29, 2021

The Cape soccer team moved to 4-2 on the season with a 5-3 win over Laurel Sept. 28.

“We are excited to get the win,” said Cape coach Patrick Kilby. “It moves us closer to our goal of qualifying for states. We need to be better with our defensive mind-set. We didn’t take pride in keeping Laurel off the scoreboard. If we are going to compete with CR and IR in the back third of our schedule, we will have to utilize upcoming matches to clean up our defensive shape all while we find that higher level of defensive pride.”

Cape outshot the Bulldogs 20-12 and held a 15-12 edge in corners.

Nick Panyko and Aldo Hernandez-Becerra each scored two goals in the victory. Dan Shives hit the twine once. Ethan Shuttleworth had two assists, with Sawyer Dotterer and Evan Burris each tallying one.

Dalson Case and Dru Schneider had nine stops in the Cape goal, while Laurel’s Dustin Reynolds stopped 15 shot attempts.

Darel Perez-Ortiz had all three goals for the Bulldogs.
