H.O. Brittingham fourth-graders complete reading marathon

November 29, 2021

With the Rehoboth Beach Marathon set for Sunday, Dec. 4, fourth-graders at H.O. Brittingham Elementary School have been preparing and participating in their own kind of race: a reading marathon.

For the past three years, Rehoboth Beach Running Company has donated old medals and shirts to students as a way to celebrate the completion of their reading marathon.

“The reading marathon begins at the start of each semester,” said Chrissie Maughan, a fourth-grade teacher at H.O. Brittingham. “All students have the opportunity to earn a medal by meeting their at-home reading goal of 2.5 hours per week.”

Students can also earn a marathon shirt plus other prizes throughout the semester in recognition of their accomplishments.

“This year was by far the best beginning and the best finish so far,” said Maughan. “We had over 35 students who met their at-home reading goals and earned a marathon medal! We are so grateful for our partnership with Rehoboth Beach Running Company and are looking forward to participating in our next marathon.”
