Historic Rosedale Beach program set Dec. 4

December 1, 2021

Rehoboth Beach Historical Society will present a program on Rosedale Beach by historian Tamara Burks at 2 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 4, at the Rehoboth Beach Museum.

Rosedale Beach was a resort and hotel which was in operation from the early 1900s to the 1970s near Millsboro.

Owned and operated by an African-American family exclusively for African-Americans, the resort once featured a hotel, boardwalk, dance hall, picnic area, beach area and some of the best entertainment anywhere in the nation at the time, including Louis Armstrong, Count Basie, James Brown, Cab Calloway, Ray Charles, Sam Cooke, Fats Waller, Ella Fitzgerald, Jackie Wilson and Stevie Wonder.

Burks has done years of research on this important aspect of Delaware's African-American history. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Delaware State University and a master’s degree from the New School for Social Research in New York City.

Participants must register for this online program in advance. To register, go to rehobothbeachmuseum.org and click on the events tab, then click on event title Conversations on History: Rosedale Beach.

The museum is at 511 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach.
