The 105-year-old railroad swing bridge spanning the Lewes-Rehoboth Canal, just south of the Savannah Road drawbridge in Lewes, will be lifted from its foundation Wednesday, Dec. 1, placed on a large flatbed truck and transported to its new resting place. The event is scheduled for between 1 and 5 p.m.
The Overfalls Foundation Weather Station video camera will broadcast this event on the Overfalls Foundation website starting at 11 a.m. The public can watch this event live on the Overfalls website at overfalls.org/weather/live_video.html.
A recent article in the Cape Gazette provides a short history of the bridge as well as details on the bridge’s final resting place. A previous article described the final resting place for the bridge, a location adjacent to the trail at the end of American Legion Road. The bridge will be installed into the permanent display Friday, Dec. 3.
Additional details about the swing bridge can be found on the Lewes Junction Railroad & Bridge Association website, lewesjunctionrr.org.
