This year’s Christmas lights better than ever

In the third verse of the opening chapter of the book of Genesis in the Bible, the author quotes God as saying, “Let there be light.” That admonition has continued to reverberate through thousands of years.

The universe jumped into action on those orders, in one way, shape or form, and people have been following suit ever since. Individuals, businesses, churches and other organizations throughout Delaware’s Cape Region and all of Sussex County are no exception.

Though we’ve just passed the winter solstice and the fewest hours of daylight in the year, many cold, dark days of winter still lie ahead. But the innumerable displays of colorful Christmas lights throughout our towns, neighborhoods and countryside pierce through that darkness in a joyful way and make the winter’s long nights of darkness far more bearable.

It’s impossible to overestimate the positive effect those lights have on all of us after the sun has set. They bring excitement to children and lift the spirits of healthcare workers, emergency responders, and others heading home in darkness from long days of work. They’re especially welcome in this wearying time of a relentless pandemic.

Not only have all of these entities turned on their holiday lights this year, but also, many say the displays are more joyful, creative, and colorful than ever before.

One of the simplest and most affordable pleasures at Christmastime is heading out into the night, either by foot or in a vehicle, grabbing a burger or a pizza at one of the hundreds of decorated eateries in the region, and then starting a slow tour of the towns and neighborhoods to marvel at all the displays. Lewes has even made a festival of just that, encouraging businesses and individuals to really get into the spirit of the season with extra decorating efforts.

We’re a region of parades, and this informal Christmas parade, its route decided by all who decide to get out and enjoy an evening tour, is the easiest one of all for everyone to participate in.
