Mask-optional policy in effect at Cape schools
Springlike temperatures greeted students and staff entering schools the morning of March 2, the first day masks were optional in Cape district buildings since the pandemic began.
At Love Creek Elementary, staff greeted students during drop-off as usual, but this day seemed a little more special, as teachers and students hugged each other. Teachers said they were happy to see their students’ smiling faces, some for the first time.
Principal Lisa Morris said she chose to still wear her mask because it is her personal preference, and she wanted to ensure that any staff or students who wanted to wear their masks felt comfortable doing so.
Superintendent Bob Fulton also made a stop at Love Creek that morning. Fulton said the excitement in the air was similar to first-day-of-school vibes.
At Cape High, the cafeteria buzzed with students talking to friends and signing a banner pledging to promote respect, acceptance and inclusion. Cape High is a Special Olympics Champion School.
Late in the afternoon at H.O. Brittingham Elementary, students and their parents gathered for an award ceremony honoring teams that competed at the Bots at the Beach robotics competition Feb. 26. Some parents even tried their hand at operating the machines.
