Mary C. Flood, Dover Post co-founder
Mary C. Flood died Tuesday, Feb. 21, 2012, at Kent General Hospital, Dover, after suffering a ruptured aneurysm of the aortic artery.
Mary was born in Philadelphia, Pa., and at the age of 3 years old, moved to New Jersey with her parents, Dr. Donald W. Storch and Mary Clark Storch. She was married to Jim Flood in 1952 in Paterson, N.J., after they met at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. They were anticipating a happy 60th wedding anniversary celebration in June.
She first moved to Dover in 1959 with her husband, Jim Flood Sr. After leaving Dover for six years' residence outside Washington, followed by nine years living in Rehoboth Beach, she returned to Dover in 1978, and was involved in the start of the Dover Post Co. As an interested and active citizen of Dover, she served on the board of the Biggs Museum of American Art and as a member of the Dover Arts Council, besides helping with the newspaper business and rearing the last of her seven children.
Mary had a lifelong interest in reading and worked in a library in Paterson while in East Side High School. That lifelong interest in books prompted her enthusiastic support of the new Dover Public Library. While work kept Mary and Jim busy for many years, they were able to fit in travel to parts of Europe and Russia later on and shared many fine memories of these experiences.
In addition to her husband, she is survived by seven children; 16 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. They are daughter Mary Kaltreider and Fred of Dover, and their son, James of San Francisco, and daughter Mary Clark of Dover; son Jim Jr. and Ann and their children, James and Julia of Dover; son David and Carolyn of Biddeford, Maine, and son, Adam of Biddeford and their son, Chris and his fiancée, Heather Miller of Lewes; son Don and Helen of Lewes and their son, Josh; daughter Ruth Clifton and Don of Milford and their sons, Bill, Lucas and John of Milford; daughter, Rebecca Hansen and her husband Lance, of Philadelphia; daughter Sara Jane and son, Patrick, of Newark; daughter Mary Ziegler and husband Joseph, of Pennington, N.J., and their children, Calvin and Daphne; son, John and Dan Barrish, of New York City and John's son, Andre Emes of Lansdale, Pa.; and son, Paul and his son Alex of Arlington, Va.
A funeral Mass will be held at 8 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 25, at Holy Cross Catholic Church on South State Street. A private burial service will be held later. A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m., Friday, at the Torbert South Chapel at 1145 E. Lebanon Road in Dover.
