Local writer Hiba Melhem Stancofski to sign books Oct. 9

Yoga and mindfulness teacher to participate in Oct. 20 Mental Health Alternatives event
October 5, 2022

Hiba Melhem Stancofski of Lewes will take part in the local author book signing fall series at Browseabout Books, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m., Sunday Oct. 9, at 133 Rehoboth Ave., Rehoboth Beach. No registration is needed, and books will be available for purchase.

A 500-hour certified yoga instructor and mindfulness teacher, Stancofski published “I Feel Better Now” in March 2021 amid the pandemic. Illustrated by Lewes-born artist Timothy Bada, the book introduces children to the tools of yoga and mindfulness.

When Alia sees her younger brother Tommy struggling emotionally, physically and mentally during the pandemic, she takes him on an outdoor adventure through Lewes and teaches him simple yet powerful mindfulness techniques to help him feel better.

The tools of mindfulness and yoga can bring more clarity and equanimity to help people cope with difficult emotions such as stress, anxiety, sadness. They can help individuals navigate life’s challenges, struggles and chaos with more ease.

Stancofski also will be a guest at the Mental Health Alternatives Vibe Up to Thrive Up event set for Thursday, Oct. 20, at Lewes Public Library. She will introduce the benefits of yoga and mindfulness to teenagers and their caregivers. Just like Alia and Tommy, everyone can benefit greatly from these practices to help self-regulate their emotions and feel better during challenging times.

“I Feel Better Now” was awarded first place in the children’s category for the 2022 Delaware Press Association Communications Contest. At its June conference, the National Federation of Press Women announced “I Feel Better Now” was honored with a third-place award in its children’s book fiction category.

Stancofski and Bada both hope the book will raise more awareness in schools and libraries nationwide about the tools of mindfulness and yoga, and how these practices can help people achieve and maintain inner calm, resilience and focus in difficult situations.

Stancofski has visited several schools to introduce “I Feel Better Now” to students in Delaware during the past year. She recently visited the Grand Lycée Franco-Libanais in her homeland, Lebanon, introducing the book, and practicing yoga and mindfulness with 180 fifth-graders. She is hoping to maintain the outreach in Delaware schools and well beyond the state and into the world throughout the coming school year.

A member of the Yoga Alliance and a Mindful Schools-certified mindfulness educator, Stancofski is currently training for a yin yoga certification.
