Lewes tree group set to meet Nov. 15

The Lewes Planning Commission Tree Ordinance Subcommittee will meet at 4 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15, at the Rollins Center. Officials will continue to discuss options for an ordinance and plans for a Jan. 19 workshop. See the meeting agenda and link at lewes.civicweb.net.

Lewes bike and ped meets Nov. 15

The Lewes Bicycle & Pedestrian Advisory Committee will meet at 6 p.m., Tuesday, Nov. 15, at City Hall. There will be an update on the map the group provides each year as well as bike parking. A report on the Lewes Bicycle Master Plan will be given prior to committee members establishing priorities for 2023 and discussing the Fiscal Year 2024 budget. Women’s retirement financial planning program set Nov. 16

What Women Want from Money, a complimentary, in-person event designed to address the challenges women may face during retirement, is set for 5:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Rehoboth Beach Public Library. 

Questions that will be covered include: Why do women as a whole have superior financial outcomes compared to men? 

Women and men share many of the same financial objectives, but how do their underlying objectives vary? 

What are different strategic approaches to investing and financial planning, and which do women prefer and why? 

What are the additional risks women face due to longevity, and what can women do now to protect themselves financially?

The particular challenges women face will be reviewed so attendees may be empowered and informed to make money management decisions in the most meaningful way for themselves and their families.

There will be time to address individual concerns during a question-and-answer session. There is no cost or obligation, and no products will be sold.

Lewes planners will meet Nov. 16

The Lewes Planning Commission will meet at 6:30 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 16, at the Rollins Center. Commissioners will continue to discuss a recommendation to mayor and city council regarding archaeological review for new developments. Reports will be provided from the environmental subcommittee and tree subcommittee before Commissioner Bob Heffernan updates the group on training opportunities and briefing items.

African American Heritage Commission set to meet Nov. 17

The Lewes African American Heritage Commission will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at City Hall. The group will resume discussions regarding the historic marker, oral histories, Johnnie Walker and Juneteenth 2023. Commissioners may vote on those topics.

Tentatively scheduled is the appointment of an ex officio member from the Lewes Historical Society to the commission. See the meeting agenda and link at lewes.civicweb.net.

Lewes BPW hosting meeting on Donovan Smith project Nov. 17

The Lewes Board of Public Works will hold a public meeting to discuss the Donovan Smith Manufactured Home Park water and sewer project at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at the Rollins Center.

Members of the public, in particular DSMHP residents, are encouraged to attend or watch the meeting. 

Teal Construction was awarded the project after the BPW accepted its proposal Nov. 9.

City engineer Charlie O’Donnell of George, Miles & Buhr recommended acceptance of the $4.46 million bid, which was within the budget of the state revolving fund. O’Donnell believes work can begin Feb. 1 and should be completed in 21 months.

Officials emphasized the importance of establishing benchmarks for the project and being transparent with DSMHP residents about the work being done.

O’Donnell stated that park owner Kenneth C. Burnham may attend the public meeting.

Ritter application on Sussex P&Z agenda

Sussex County Planning & Zoning Commission will meet at 5 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, in the county administration building, 2 The Circle, Georgetown. Included on the agenda are a review of the final site plan for Blessing Greenhouses & Compost Facility Inc., and a public hearing on a conditional-use application filed by Howard L. Ritter & Sons Inc. to allow the continued sale and storage of stone, mulch, soil and other products at the company's borrow pit at 33508 Ritter Lake Road, Lewes, off  Plantation Road.

Rehoboth officials to meet Nov. 18

Rehoboth Beach commissioners will meet at 2 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18, in the commissioners room of city hall, 229 Rehoboth Ave.

The agenda calls for a permit of compliance hearing for a restaurant at 123 Second St., consideration of a new fee for license agreements, and continued discussions on demolition code and regulations regarding outdoor dining on public space.

Cape school board meets Nov. 17

The Cape Henlopen school board will meet at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, at Love Creek Elementary.

Members will discuss a plan for expanding the Spanish Immersion program into middle school and long-range facilities planning. The board may possibly vote on several policies. For the full agenda and meeting link, go to capehenlopenschools.com.

Dewey commissioners meet Nov. 18

Dewey Beach commissioners will hold their monthly meeting and a public hearing at 3 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18, in the Lifesaving Station, 1 Dagsworthy Ave.

A public hearing and possible vote will be held on an ordinance regarding a conditional-use permit and an application for restaurant permit of compliance to expand the conditional use for Dewey Beach Country Club. Commissioners may also possibly vote to approve a contract to hire a new police chief. Other possible votes include amending town code by adding a new section to define commercial activity on the beach and a new chapter regarding usage of drones within town boundaries, and referring to the planning commission an application to rezone the property at 100 Buena Road from Resort Business-2 to Resort Residential along with the proposed ordinance to rezone said parcel and to amend the comprehensive map accordingly.
