I have read the letters to the editor concerning the proposed Royal Farms and the McDonald’s in Milton. Just as King Canute was unable to stem the flow of the tide, neither will the flow of traffic be controlled.
The traffic problem is a result of irresponsible planning at the state, county and local levels. The goals of more housing and additional transfer and real estate taxes were too enticing to bother with infrastructure and services for the residents.
To suggest that residents simply drive to the highway for shopping and restaurants is an imperious observation. There are many residents of Milton whose families have lived here for generations. Many of these families provide the day-to-day services enjoyed by the newcomers and cannot afford the drive to Route 1 or the cost of a meal at the plethora of white-tablecloth restaurants, as well as lower-cost eateries. Also, those trips add up in time away from their employment in order to get there. As we all know, a jaunt down Route 1 is no easy task, especially during the warmer months!
The children and grandchildren of our locals, many of whom play little league or football, enjoy meeting with their teammates and family after a game to enjoy a burger and fries. To deny them that pleasure is sad. As the jingle says, “They deserve a break today!”
