Local artist to exhibit at state's smallest, strangest gallery May 20-21

May 5, 2023

Lincoln resident Daniel Dohring will be showing a selection of his original abstract paintings from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, May 20 and 21, at Gallery Uberspannt, 16492 Fitzgeralds Road, Lincoln.

The gallery, located on Dohring's property, is only about 200 square feet, and he calls it Delaware's smallest and strangest art gallery.

Dohring's life as an artist began in the 1980s when he was a teenager in high school, where sketching and drawing was a favorite hobby. During that time, he had one of his pen-and-ink drawings entered into a high school art show and won an award for best design. In time he became the owner of Dohring Galleries in Huntingdon, Pa., which featured many of the top wildlife, nature and fantasy artists of the ‘80s and ‘90s, such as Charles Wysocki, Bev Doolittle and Thomas Kinkade.

In 2000, Dohring relocated to his family's roots in southern Delaware, and he now paints almost daily in his studio. He describes his paintings as abstract with a touch of sci-fi, fantasy and other oddities. The gallery's name, "Uberspannt," is a German word meaning strange, eccentric or beyond convention, and it seems to fit Dohring's style of painting. His most recent showing was in August 2022 at the Rehoboth Art League's 10th regional juried biennial exhibition, where he won an honorable mention award for his original acrylic painting "Fantastic Voyage.”
