Delaware’s eighth-grade proficiency levels are just 18% for math and 24% for reading, according to the Caesar Rodney Institute. The Cape Henlopen School district’s eighth-grade proficiency levels are 50% for reading and 38% for math, according to U.S. News. Let that sink in. They should be ashamed of these results, yet they seem strangely proud of them. They have taken their eye off the ball and now focus more on social issues than on education. Their allegiance to diversity, equity and inclusion will undoubtedly make educational outcomes even worse and leave us less competitive in the world.
DEI is a political cudgel that favors certain racial groups who they believe will help them in elections. The non-political solution is quite simple: help those children who need help, regardless of their race or sexual orientation, then protect vulnerable children from bullies and make our schools safe. The reason it is not done this way is because there is no political gain from it.
The education of our children is an important issue for us all, regardless of whether you have children of school age. Many of our societal problems begin with poorly educated children being unable to compete in the workplace. We owe it to them to fix it. One small step would be to change the composition of the school board. Please vote for Shawn Lovenguth Tuesday, May 9, as he represents a return to traditional values.
