La Red Health Center and its partners offered free screenings and provided a variety of health information during its spring community health resource fair May 3 at its main campus, 21444 Carmean Way, Georgetown.
The free event featured more than 15 vendors, coffee, tacos, food distribution boxes, health screenings, COVID-19 vaccinations and mental health resources.
Organizations represented at the health resource fair included La Red Health Center, the Food Bank of Delaware’s Mobile Pantry, CAMP Rehoboth, Brandywine Counseling, Beebe Healthcare Community Outreach, People’s Place, Sussex Pride, Gateway Clothing Connection, Delaware First Health, Contact Lifeline Inc., CORAS Wellness & Behavioral Health, Milford Homeless Advocates, La Esperanza, Westside Family Healthcare, Delaware First Health and the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition.
Bilingual staff members from La Red Health Center also helped individuals connect with community resources beyond the event.
According to data from the Delaware Division of Public Health’s My Healthy Community website, individuals who live in the areas where La Red Health Centers are located — Georgetown, Seaford and Milford — tend to have higher rates of chronic conditions such as diabetes and heart disease, and a greater number of residents who are uninsured. Events such as the health resource fair are an important component to connecting individuals to care early, when these conditions are preventable or most treatable. Prevention and early detection improve outcomes and help contain healthcare costs.
“The best way to manage chronic conditions and healthcare costs is through routine health screenings, preventative healthcare and connecting individuals to the services they need to live a healthy life,” said Rosa Rivera, La Red Health Center chief operations officer. “La Red’s mission is to provide quality healthcare to all Sussex County residents, and the best way to do that is to make sure every resident has access to the care they need. We appreciate our staff and partners who helped us provide these vital services to members of our community during the La Red Spring Health Resource Fair.”
