Former Sussex official asks for increased road safety measures
The following is a letter sent to Sen. Russ Huxtable, D-Lewes, with a copy provided to the Cape Gazette for publication.
I write to you on the Friday evening before the Memorial Day weekend, when our roads are full of enthusiastic drivers arriving to enjoy the delights of Sussex County.
You are the senator of Delaware’s Sixth District, and I ask you to campaign for the safety of our roads, especially those in the Route 1 area.
Today, I read in the Cape Gazette about a head-on collision caused by a car crossing the median into the opposite side. The writer’s point was that a median barrier may have stopped the collision or at least might have protected the drivers somewhat. I agree, we do need safety median barriers in our part of Route 1.
I also read about a tragic accident at the intersection of Route 1 at Cave Neck Road, which is a still as perilous as it was in 2016 when I tried to convince DelDOT to install a traffic light there.
People are dying on our roads, and the state can make us safer now, at this time. The plans for the Cave Neck Road overpass have been on the books for years. We need safety now.
Let’s work on making our roads safer.
