In defense of the Rehoboth Bandstand

June 6, 2023

A recent letter was published by Leslie Moyer. Mentioning specifically rap music, this is just a snippet of genres that may have been heard on Memorial Day weekend, which is a weekend spent by many tourists, including all ages and families.

Jimi Smooth & Hit Time is primarily known for R&B, soul, Motown style. I can't speak to them performing any rap music from what I've known, but perhaps.

Mike Hines and the Look plays R&B, hip hop, pop, old-school funk, along with a small taste of Motown and disco. They are high energy and want people having a good time, dancing, clapping and feeling good. They are very versatile and deserve to have respect after more than 35 years of entertaining audiences.

The Rehoboth Beach Bandstand carefully schedules acts to reflect the diverse mix of tourists and locals who visit the Nation's Summer Capital every summer.

"People who left" may not have been in the mood for a good time that either of these two acts provide, but these musicians are hired and scheduled for what they do bring – the energy of a celebration. If we just narrow the window to a stereotypical crowd, others will be denied the opportunity. It's always a good idea to check the website and see who's playing, as their description will let you know if it's something you might be interested in.
