After 15 years of Diving Into History, Rehoboth Beach Historical Society Director Nancy Alexander is leaving her post. Nancy became the society's first and only full-time paid director, and has guided the organization since the museum's opening in 2007.
Her legacy includes raising more than $600,000 to fund the second-floor expansion, upgraded permanent and rotating exhibits of quality and historical significance, a substantial increase in membership, many grants going to education programs, adding more than 2,000 items to our collection, increasing use of the city’s historic Anna Hazard House, raising $120,000 to replace the heating and air conditioning system, assembling a loyal staff of highly experienced volunteers and docents, creating and providing countless fascinating educational programs for the public, maintaining and adding to the museum’s archives, coordinating our upcoming postcard book launch, organization and success of 15 years of the annual Beach Ball fundraiser that keeps the museum operational, and the acquisition of the iconic Dolle’s sign now gracing the west wall of the museum.
Nancy will be missed. We have been so fortunate to benefit from her dedication to the museum and the history of the City of Rehoboth Beach. My search committee will now begin the challenging search for her replacement.
In closing, here is a quote from Nancy that accurately sums up her understanding of her time with the museum: "No one person can call himself or herself the Rehoboth historian. The history of this city resides in the collective memories of all who cherish it."
