Surprisingly competitive basketball

June 9, 2023

As of right now, the Denver Nuggets are ahead in the NBA finals 2-1. I assumed Denver was going to dominate Miami, but through the first three games, Miami has had a legitimate chance to win every one of them. As usual, Game 4 is the most important game of the series, especially because Miami is at home. And if they can even out the series, I think they will have a legitimate chance to win the whole thing.

For example, Game 3 was very close going into halftime, and the Nuggets played a great fourth quarter to pull away in the end. We will see how it goes.

The French Open tennis tournament is coming to its conclusion and Novak Djokovic is going for a men’s record-breaking 24th Grand Slam championship, which would break a tie with Rafael Nadal, who won 14 French Opens alone. Rafael missed playing his favorite Grand Slam because he’s having hip surgery and will miss the rest of the year. I hope Nadal is able to play one more year of Grand Slam tournaments so he can go out on his own terms.

On the women’s side, Coco Gauff lost in the quarterfinals. This is good progress for her. I think she has a much better chance to win her first major at Wimbledon or the U.S. Open this year. Iga Swiatek from Poland is trying to win her second straight French Open.

On Tuesday, there was some surprising news in the world of men’s golf. The PGA Tour and the LIV golf tour are going to merge starting next year. Not many details have come out as to how the LIV golf tour players will be allowed to come back to the PGA Tour. I think there’s going to be some sort of penalty for all of the LIV players, but nobody knows so far how much money the LIV players may have to give to the PGA.

The LIV tour was having significant problems coming up with a legitimate TV partner to air the tournaments and get viewers. The PGA Tour is also going to have a problem describing how they’re going to use all of the money from the Saudi Arabian government.

To end on good note, congratulations to the Cape Henlopen boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams on making it to the finals in their respective state tournaments. Unfortunately, both teams were unable to win the championship, but both had great seasons. I’m sure the underclass boys and girls will use this as motivation to come back strong next year. Go Cape.
