Bayhealth cuts ribbon on new Route 9 facility
Bayhealth officially cut the ribbon on its new total care facility on Route 9 near Lewes, bringing with it a new evolution in healthcare for the Cape Region.
The new Bayhealth Total Care, located across Route 9 from Dollar General, is a 49,000-square-foot hybrid care facility, meaning that it includes both emergency care, urgent care and outpatient services.
Bayhealth CEO Terry Murphy said the facility is the first of its kind in Delaware, allowing for a more efficient level of care.
“A hybrid emergency room is where if you are unsure if it’s an urgent issue, you come here and they will clinically bifurcate. It just doesn’t build emergency room visits. It reduces the number of true emergency room visits by having that differentiation clinically. We’re very excited about it,” Murphy said.
He said the style of care is part of a partnership with Intuitive Health, which originated the hybrid system in Texas. In addition to making it more efficient for Bayhealth, Murphy said, this style of care will also help reduce the costs.
“It will be much more efficient for those that don’t have a true emergency,” he said.
The facility has two trauma bays, diagnostic testing and specialists on hand. For Bayhealth, the facility also represents a place where it can be staffed by Bayhealth’s own residency program, which started in 2020 and is set to graduate its first group of physicians. The program, which runs out of Bayhealth’s Milford hospital, has 73 resident physicians in house. Murphy said the new Lewes area facility also serves as a place to keep those physicians in the Cape Region.
