Many thanks to Ron MacArthur for writing, and to the Cape Gazette for running, the extensive article on the history of railroads in Sussex County (Cape Gazette, Friday, July 28). That history is long, multifaceted, and integral to what Lewes was and is. Further, learning about the ways in which Lewes and Sussex County were influenced by the existence of the railroads provides insight into understanding various periods of history on a national level and the roles agriculture, the fishing industry, and the military played in our growth as a nation.
The emphasis Lewes has placed on its history as a draw to visitors and residents is unique among beach towns. The Lewes Junction Railroad and Bridge Association is honored to contribute to that distinction by bringing its focus on the railroads to our partnerships with our fellow history-oriented community organizations.
