Lewes neighbor supports Daisey project

August 8, 2023

I am trying to understand why the Lewes Historic Preservation Architectural Review Commission is standing in the way of the Daisey family demolishing their existing house at 331 Chestnut St. and replacing it with one that better matches the other homes in what is a very nice neighborhood. The family wants to better position a home on the lot to help the aesthetics, as well as safety. My wife and I purchased the lot across the street from them a few years ago, and one of our biggest drawbacks was the looks of the house. We were concerned that this would potentially harm the value of our future home. I was excited to hear that the Daisey family was looking to demolish the house and build a new, more aesthetically pleasing home, only to hear that HPARC was standing in the way. I don’t know of a single neighbor who opposes this, since the existing house detracts from the neighborhood. I know a new house, built within Lewes architectural standards, would help the family, the neighborhood, the historic district and the city. Maybe HPARC should poll the residents who actually live on the street. After all, aren't they the ones who would be affected most by this positive change in our community?
