Brandywine Valley SPCA takes in pets from hurricane-ravaged Florida

September 4, 2023

Brandywine Valley SPCA volunteers welcomed more than 60 furry friends from Florida Sept. 1, as part of shelter animals evacuated from Florida in the wake of Hurricane Idalia.

The Category 3 storm slammed into northern and central Florida Aug. 30, with sustained winds up to 125 mph. Brandywine Valley SPCA had previously taken in more than 70 pets from Florida before the storm made landfall, then got an additional planeload Sept. 1, with the animals flown from Jacksonville to Delaware Coastal Airport in Georgetown.

The dogs and cats on the flight were previously available for adoption at shelters in both Florida and Georgia. From the airport, the animals were loaded into vans and taken to Brandywine Valley SPCA’s Animal Rescue Center on Shingle Point Road near Milton, where they were evaluated and put up for adoption starting Sept. 3.

Brandywine Valley SPCA CEO Adam Lamb said, “As soon as we saw Hurricane Idalia’s potential path and projected devastation, we began planning how we could help. These are the times when we in the sheltering community need to all stand together, regardless of borders.”
