Cape hockey powers to 3-0 win at Sussex Academy

Big games ahead for Vikings and Seahawks
October 11, 2023

Cape hockey rolls relentlessly through the midfield, putting pressure on the opponents’ defense.

At Seahawks Stadium Oct. 10 against an athletic Sussex Academy team, the Vikings put 17 shots on goal, with three finding the cage for a 3-0 shutout victory to improve to 9-1 on the season.

Goalie Morgan Newcomb earned her eighth shutout, making six saves on six Seahawks shots.

Sussex Academy dropped to 5-4, with the four losses coming to Delmar, Smyrna, Milford and Cape, which have a combined record of 35-4.

Cape cracked the corner code versus sophomore goalie Kacie Rawlings at 9:35 of the first period on a goal by Macy Steinwedel, assisted by Atia Sabbagh.

Steinwedel scored again unassisted at 8:54 of the third period. Freshman Emily Wells  scored Cape’s third goal with 42 seconds left in the third period.

Cape had an 11-3 advantage in penalty corners.

Rawlings had 14 saves for the Seahawks.

Cape is scheduled to play at Dover Thursday, Oct. 12, then at Indian River Friday, Oct. 13.

Delmar will play the Vikings at Champions Stadium at 6 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 19.

Head on a swivel - Delmar beat Dover 9-0 Oct. 10 with a 46-1 shots-on-goal advantage, including 32 corners. The corners were part of a Corners for Carter fundraiser for the family of Carter Figgs, a junior Delmar football player who lost his life in a car accident over the weekend. Jordyn Hollamon had four goals in the game. Dover goalie Savannah Strauss had 36 saves.

Milford, the upstart team of the year at 7-2, beat Saint Mark's (8-2) in overtime 5-4. The winning goal was scored by Isabel Betts on an assist from Hannah Zimmerman. Betts and Zimmerman each had two goals in the game, while Bailey Masten also scored. Mady Stahl  recorded seven saves.

The Odessa Ducks are a new player on the Division I scene with a record of 7-2 on the season and likely a top 6 postseason tournament seed. They are coached by Maria Collier and Tara Daddio.

Newark Charter (9-1) will play at Sussex Academy (5-4) at 4 p.m., Monday, Oct. 16. That is an intriguing upstate-versus-downstate charter school matchup considering Sussex Academy’s strength of schedule.
