Cape Henlopen High School football coach Mike Frederick, who led the Vikings to the 3A state finals for the first time in 39 years, received the 3A Coach of the Year Award Jan. 29 at the annual Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association banquet at the Modern Maturity Center in Dover.

The award is voted on by peers.

Speaking to reporter Sean Greene, Frederick said, “The whole process and journey of this season took on a life of its own. We were playing the best at the end of the season. The community embraced us – pregame meals at restaurants followed by sendoffs. It was a blessing we all got to experience together. I just wish we could have finished it off.”

Cape players honored included first-team all-state selections: kicker Wilson Ingerski, defensive player Brenn Scott and offensive player Maurki James. Jackson Cunningham received the Sportsmanship Award.

Cape’s end-of-the-year football banquet is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 15 at the Rehoboth Beach Convention Center.
