Watch out for the turbine

February 2, 2024

I was driving home from a doctor’s appointment Tuesday when I noticed the traffic was unusually heavy for midday. And people were driving wilder than normal. As I turned onto Route 1, it was bumper-to-bumper and people were leaning on their horns and shaking their fists. “What the heck was going on?” I shouted. “Get out before it is too late!” was the reply. As I entered my development, neighbors were loading suitcases and some furniture in their pickup. I waved, but no one even looked up. I turned on my street and there were for sale signs. I finally stopped and asked Bill next door why is he’s leaving?

“Did you see it? It’s come!”

“See what?”.

“Today’s Gazette. Front page! Property values are going to drop 50% by the end of the week, I tell ya. You won’t be able to give your house away by spring!”

I ran to my mailbox, opened the paper and, "Oh no!" There it was right there sitting next to the canal in Lewes. A giant wind turbine! Out of nowhere it just appeared. What will I do?

I opened the paper and on Page 7, it says the darn thing has been there since 2010, generating power to the University of Delaware and 100 homes around it. 2010?

How did they keep it a secret so long?
