Huxtable’s speech police

February 13, 2024

Facts are facts. Opinions are opinions. Sharing an opinion and doing so in a section of the newspaper called “Viewpoints” isn’t being dishonest. There may be some who like the title of the letter; there may be some who don’t. There may be some who feel more could have been said; there may be others who don’t. That is the whole point of sharing an opinion letter. Special thanks to the Cape Gazette for allowing residents to do so in every edition.

We live in a country where we hold our elected officials accountable for what they say and what they don’t say. We can exercise that freedom of accountability at the ballot box and also do so through communicating our praise or disapproval. Insisting those opinions are uncivil shows a self-conscious vulnerability in Sen. Russ Huxtable’s supporters and a disingenuous defensive messaging tactic in his campaign.

Greg Kordal, in his Jan. 23 letter to the editor, did readers a favor by laying bare the progressive need to smear and cancel opposing opinions just as Hilary Clinton did by labeling those who opposed her platform as deplorables. Nursing grudges over year-old letters and name calling may play well with elites in the eastern Sussex County Democratic Party, but most locals can see the bullying for what it is: weakness.

  • A letter to the editor expresses a reader's opinion and, as such, is not reflective of the editorial opinions of this newspaper.

To submit a letter to the editor for publishing, send an email to viewpoints@capegazette.com. All letters are considered at the discretion of the newsroom and published as space allows. Due to the large volume of submissions, we cannot acknowledge receipt of each submission. Letters must include a phone number and address for verification. Keep letters to 400 words or fewer. We reserve the right to edit for content or length. Letters should be responsive to issues addressed in the Cape Gazette rather than content from other publications or media. Letters should focus on local issues, not national topics or personalities. Only one letter per author will be published every 30 days regarding a particular topic. Authors may submit a second letter within that time period if it pertains to a different issue. Letters may not be critical of personalities or specific businesses. Criticism of public figures is permissible. Endorsement letters for political candidates are no longer accepted. Letters must be the author’s original work, and may not be generated by artificial intelligence tools. Templates, form letters and letters containing language similar to other submissions will not be published.
