I was glad to see the two articles in last week’s edition concerning littering, and the fact that there are laws against littering and who's responsible for clean cleanup. I agree those responsible for littering need to start getting fined or at least a first-offense warning of what's to come!
Unfortunately, that may be what it takes to get folks’ attention, because nothing else seems to work for repeat offenders. Then comes the issue(s) of who is going to police this and who is going to issue warnings/fines. I feel sure the folks at DelDOT have been around and around with this issue for years now, as it is an obvious and ongoing problem!
We are members of DelDOT’s Adopt-A-Highway program. It's a good plan, and like many other plans, it can always be made better. One way is by getting more members who care! Do you know that Adopt-A-Highway members are only responsible for the sides the road out to the right of way, which is usually about up to property lines? So what happens if trash or litter is over property line? We will go the extra distance and pick up someone else's trash in someone else's yard as long as it isn't too deep! In our group, we always offer members breakfast or lunch as our own personal incentive after cleanup! If it sounds like I'm encouraging you to get involved, I am! We've got a spot for one more!
